I jlike the colors in the sky and the clouds. This was part of a larger painting that I didn't like. So I tore off the bottom to focus on the sky.

Sit Down, Take A Load Off

This is a scene from the Jolli Lodge in Leland MI. The lodge is an iconic Michigan summer retreat what look like from the 1960's. Its a real gem. A favorite place. I look at this painting and I feel like I'm back there.

Paradise Point

Paradise Point

Inspired by a friend's photo of Paradise Point on the North Chanel of Lake Huron, just north of Detour Michigan

This painting started out as a experiment with colors. Then it became a painting as the mountains popped up.

I really like the sky and the colors in this mountain scene. It came together so easily. Lucky

I like the neighborhood feel of this one

A cliffside trail along the Pacific in Mendocino California. As along the ocean the air was heavy with moisture

A gray stark image of an abandoned farm house. Inspired by a photo from Justin Schow

I painted this under the tutelege of Don Marek, a Kalamazoo artist. This is one of my favorites. I love the way the watercolors moved and blended on the paper and the colors in the sky.

I like the clouds looming over the trail

Painted in a class at the KIA the challenge in this was the draped fabric. It turned out ok.

This is based on a painting by English watercolorist Ed Seago. I like the rusty hull of the boat and the reflections in the water.

I like the light and shadows in this painting. It demonstrates how powerfully the white of the paper can really define the painting.

I like the loose abstraction

Colorado Mountain

Colorado Mountain

This is from a photo taken from an Amtrak train going through Colorado

Untitled

Untitled

One of my favorite paintings. The composition and values are good. It's a loose painting with an exagerated but apparent barn. The fence posts lead the eye up to the barn which is connected to the ground with the blended colors. Just a fun painting hitting all the right buttons with me and is a good example of what watercolor as a medium can do so well. Inspired by Kalamazoo area artist/teacher Susan Badger.

Sedona

Sedona

This is my first attempt at an indoor scene. This was done in a workshop with watercolor artist Keiko Tanabe. I am going to do this one several more times.

Untitled

Untitled

This was inspired by Australian artist Herman Pekel. I like the simple brushstrokes and limited palette.

Crazy Flowers

Crazy Flowers

At first i didn't like this painting. It was going in the recycle bin. It was more of a practice piece than anything else. My stepdaughter's friend saw it, wanted it, and got it. But the more I looked the better I liked the looseness of it and how the colors mixed and combined. I used some ink as well.

Untitled

I like the linear direction the painting takes you eyes up the slope of the mountain, the huge cloud against the dark blue sky

At the Dock

At the Dock

This painting is done with sepia watercolor and India ink I applied with an eye dropper. I imagine they are fishing boats from a long gone era at a working dock. I like the dark values on the buildings and boat hulls that define the composition. It's a pretty silly exagerated painting that was fun to see come together. Inspired by Kalamazoo artist Don Marek from whom I learned a lot. One of my favorites.

A distant sunset coloring the landscape

Rhinoceros

Rhinoceros

This is done in india ink and water. I like the aggresiveness of the Rhino with his ears and tail up and turning toward the viewer. It is one of my first paintings and hangs framed in my studio. My stepdaughter Tamsen has a stuffed rhinoceros she got from her students while on a study abroad trip. She named it Eugène afterseeing Rhinocéros, an absurdist play written by Eugène Lonesco. She always thinks of Lonesco when she sees this painting.

This hangs in my grandson's bedroom.

Scottish Coastline

Scottish Coastline

Painted with two colors, French Ultramarine and Burnt Sienna, and highlighted with India Ink. Abstract but suggestive. A very simple painting but it shows how many colors one can derive from just two pigments.

Hummingbird

Hummingbird

This was inspired by a photo from my stepson taken on his road trip to California. I like the way the light hits the top of the mountain.

Our dog Eddie. He's actually a black dog but I used various blues instead. Colors are different but it's Eddie. Framed and hanging in my wife's fiber studio.

Pompous Rooster

Pompous Rooster

The title says it all. Inspired by that famous Warner Brothers actor Foghorn Leghorn

This is a copy of a painting by one of my favorite American painters, Winslow Homer. It is framed and on our boat

This is a copy of the painting "Blue Boat" by American watercolor artist Winslow Homer. He is definitely one of my favorite artists. He worked in other media as well as watercolor, but it is said that watercolor was his preference. This painting is 11x15, while Homer's original was twice the size at 15x22

Sunset on South Haven Dunes

Sunflowers

I like the looseness of this painting. Done shortly after the Russion invasion of Ukraine.

A Fall Walk

A Fall Walk

Inspired by a late Fall day in Asylum Lake Preserve in Kalamazoo

Twin Pines

Twin Pines

Named after a former home dairy in southeast Michigan that sponsored a Saturday morning children's program featuring Milky the Clown. I just thought the name fit the picture. (On the backside of this painiting is Dinghy Dock).

Dinghy Dock

Dinghy Dock

When I first painted the picture Twin Pines I didn't like it. So to conserve paper I painted the this picture of a dinghy dock on the back. Sometime later I decided I really did like the Twin Pines picture and framed it. Hence, this painting is hidden,

Dune Walk

This is a walk through some dunes to Lake Michigan. I've done that walk so many times. This painting is 22x12

A Pair

A Pair

I painted this because I liked the way the light was shining on the fruit and reflecting on the surface. (Sorry for the pun).

Ship Rock

Ship Rock

Ship Rock is located in New Mexico and part of the Navajo nation. It's a sacred site to the Naavajo and in this rendering takes on the look of medieval cathederal.

I like the darker mood of this painting and the sense of being in a wooded area. This is done in watercolor with india ink applied with a eye dropper. I like the abstract colors that define the shapes of the landscape.
